ShotDeck at SXSW 2026 Recap
Hey ShotDeck Community! We were thrilled to support the 33rd SXSW Festival with free ShotDeck accounts for the Film and TV Award Winners as well as on the ground coverage of some of this years biggest premieres and releases, including Bob Odenkirk’s new action thriller, Normal, Maude Apatow’s directorial debut, Poetic License, and several other buzzy titles.
Filmmaker Inspiration Series
Throughout the festival we attended several red carpet premieres where we asked filmmakers and actors “What Films Always Inspire You?”
We got and incredible list of answers just from Bob Odenkirk alone, who named Chinatown, My Life as a Dog, Police Story, High Plains Drifter, Hang ‘Em High, The Outlaw Josey Wales, and Together as some of his biggest inspirations. We also got recommendations from actors like Dakota Fanning, Debbie Ryan, Cheech Marin, Cooper Hoffman, and Cory Michael Smith who listed What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Prestige, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Drinking Buddies, and Being There amongst their top films.
Creative Team Deep Dives
In addition to our red carpet coverage, we had the unique opportunity to speak with several key crew members about their filmmaking processes, from pre production through post.
We discussed the development of Normal with director Ben Wheatley and screenwriter Derek Kolstad. For Their Town, Katie Aselton’s latest directorial effort, we explored the challenges of shooting an indie film at night with cinematographer Sarah Whelden. Finally, for Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, we spoke with cinematographer Larry Fong, ASC, about his big break with director Zack Snyder on 300 as well as his side job performing magic, stay tuned until the end for a trick.
