ShotDeck at the 40th Annual ASC Awards Recap

Hey ShotDeck Community! We were thrilled to interview some of the incredible award winners, nominees, and honorees at the 40th Annual ASC Awards this year. Honored guests included Autumn Durald Arkapaw, ASC (who took home the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Sinners one week later at the Academy Awards), Robert D. Yeoman, ASC (receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award), Team Deakins (comprised of Sir Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC and James Deakins; presenting the Documentary Award for 2000 Meters from Andriivka), and many many more.

Filmmaker Inspiration Series

Throughout the festival we attended several red carpet premieres where we asked filmmakers and actors “What Films Always Inspire You?”

Our main coverage of the event featured high profile interviews at the red carpet, where we got to ask filmmakers what films they recommended every aspiring cinematographer must see. We were thrilled with the response online, with one user even making a Letterboxd List of all the auggestions listed in the interview!

Other guests included Natasha Braier, ASC, ADF (DP, I Love Boosters), Ben Kutchins, ASC (DP, The White Lotus), Adam Newport-Berra (DP, The Studio), Jessica Lee Gagné (DP, Severance), Mandy Walker, AM, ACS, ASC (DP, Elvis), Tommy Maddox-Upshaw, ASC (DP, Snowfall), and Ernest R. Dickerson, ASC (Director and DP), amongst other incredible filmmakers.

Story Behind the Shot

We also had an opportunity to speak to Academy-Award Winner Ryan Coogler and Michael Bauman about their favorite shots from their respective films, Sinners and One Battle After Another. From the logistics of working with your producer (and wife) on set, to getting strapped in a military helicopter for filming, the two go into depth about their process in doing what it takes to get the perfect shot.

Wrap-Up

A special thank you to all of the incredible filmmakers and actors who gave us their time, as well as the ASC for having us at their incredible event. Give us a follow on Instagram to get up-to-date filmmaking coverage!
